With time and routine, we’ve seen a thing or two when it comes to the cleanliness of homes. Read below to find out the most commonly overlooked areas in the kitchen & learn how to quickly clean them.
Your Neglected Dish Rack
Dish racks collect water in the trays & really need a good cleaning frequently in order to keep them mildew-free. Fill a sink or tub with water (something large enough to completely submerge the dish rack inside), and add 1/4 cup of bleach for each gallon of water. Let the dish rack soak in the water & bleach mixture for at least 20 minutes. Then use a sponge or cloth to wipe away any gunk. Make sure to clean each individual bar on the rack in order to remove all of the mildew, as well all of the corners & tight spaces (old toothbrushes work great!). Rinse the rack thoroughly with water & allow it to air dry completely.
Dampen sponges & put them in the microwave for 2 minutes in order to kill 99% of germs.
Fill up a microwave-safe bowl with 1-2 cups of water & 2 tablespoons of white vinegar. Put the bowl in the microwave & run it for 5-10 minutes. The vinegar & steam will help loosen up food grime, so you can then wipe your microwave clean with a damp towel.
The Garbage Disposal & Sink Drain
This is one of the most easily overlooked areas in your kitchen, but one of the easiest to clean! Deodorize the sink drain once a week by pouring a cup of white vinegar down the drain & let it set for about 30 minutes before rinsing with cold water. For the garbage disposal, make a 1/2 vinegar and 1/2 water mixture, pour evenly into an ice cube tray & put in the freezer overnight. The next day, put one of the cubes in the garbage disposal & run it for 1-2 minutes while flushing with cool water. You can also then throw a few slices of lemon in the garbage disposal & run it once more to leave it smelling fresh.
Your Best Friend in the Morning, the Coffee Machine
These machines can have more germs than both bathroom door handles & toilet seats–gross! We shared an easy way to clean your coffee machine as part of our #HandyTipTuesday series: Once a month, run vinegar through your machine to disinfect it. Fill the reservoir with vinegar & begin to run the vinegar through a cycle, but stop halfway through and let the machine sit for 30-60minutes. Then, turn your coffee maker back on to complete the cycle. Finish by running two cycles of clean water through it to flush the vinegar out.
